Manchester Metrolink’s East Lancashire Railway tram unveiled

On Sunday 31 May, East Lancashire Railway Preservation Society President Peter Waterman officially named Manchester Metrolink tram no. 1007 East Lancashire Railway in a ceremony at Bury Interchange station.

Around 50 members and volunteers of the railway were joined by Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Executive Metrolink Director Philip Purdy and officials from Stagecoach Metrolink, to see Mr Waterman unveil the newly-applied nameplates on the tram. ELRPS Chairman Graham Thornton welcomed guests and explained how the naming had been made possible following a great deal of co-operation from both GMPTE and Stagecoach Metrolink, who had been incredibly supportive of the idea. Mr Thornton said that the naming was a fitting tribute to the many volunteers who assist in running the railway, before handing over to Mr Waterman, who also spoke of his respect for the work of heritage railway volunteers and their dedication to the railway preservation movement.
